Intentional Deceit - Part 2

The Hebrew word sheol is the inspired equivalent to hades.  It means "unseen", "imperceptible", it is the "state of the dead".  This has been covered in depth in other blogs.


The KJV translators made decisions when translating the Hebrew word sheol.


In every single case sheol should have been translated as defined above and the Inspired Word would prove itself to make perfect sense if they had done so.


No... instead, the theological box of the translators and those ruling over them must be saved at all cost!  To "hell" with consistency!


When convenient, they translated it as "grave" instead of "hell".

The translators also know full well that the Hebrew has a word for "grave" and they translated as such 68 times. 


It's [H6913 - qeber] and they absolutely knew this!  They were consistent with this Hebrew word ALL 68 times.


In Part 1 we saw a blatant attempt to save their precious doctrine of eternal punishment in hell.


In Part 2 we're going to examine other such attempts in the Old Testament.


The KJV translators 31 times translated sheol as "hell" and 31 times they chose the word "grave" instead... 3 times "pit".


Why?

Jacob (later named Israel) could not be explained as going to hell... that would CRUSH their theological box!


[1]  Gen 37:35  And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I [Jacob] will go down into the grave [H7585 - sheol] unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.


[2]  Gen 42:38  And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my [Jacob] gray hairs with sorrow to the grave [H7585 - sheol].


[3]  Gen 44:29  And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my [Jacob] gray hairs with sorrow to the grave [H7585 - sheol]


[4]  Gen 44:31  It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father [Jacob] with sorrow to the grave [H7585 - sheol]

The translators couldn't have anyone thinking that God would bring them up out of hell:

[5]  1 Sa 2:6  The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave [H7585 - sheol], and bringeth up.

The next verse is king David speaking concerning Joab.  I'm surprised they didn't translate this one as "hell" considering the acts of Joab... 


BUT!  They couldn't... because that would mean that king Solomon would have the power to send people to "hell"!


[6]  1 Ki 2:6  Do therefore according to thy [Solomon] wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave [H7585 - sheolin peace.

Concerning Shimei who cursed king David:


[7]  1 Ki 2:9  Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou [Solomon] down to the grave [H7585 - sheolwith blood.

Job, in hell?  Nope... doesn't work for the translators.  That would discount their doctrine of hell:


[8]  Job 7:9  As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he [Job] that goeth down to the grave [H7585 - sheolshall come up no more.

Would Job ask God to hide him in hell?

[9]  Job 14:13  O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave [H7585 - sheol], that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Could the translators lead us to think that hell is Job's house?

[10]  Job 17:13  If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.

What about the wicked that Job is describing?  Why wasn't this verse translated as hell?

[11]  Job 21:13  They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave [H7585 - sheol].


It couldn't be translated as hell because elsewhere in this chapter Job says "neither is the rod of God upon them" and both the good and wicked "shall lie down alike in the dust and the worms shall cover them", and most importantly:


Job 21:30  That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction?  They shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. 


Job 21:32  Yet shall he be brought to the grave [H6913 - qeber], and shall remain in the tomb.


The translators don't dare draw attention to the actual Truth by changing Job 21:13 to "hell".  These verses above in Job prove that they KNOW the wicked will be resurrected to Judgment one day.  


There is NO immortality of the soul - these are not in hell!  The above verses are clear!

One thing is clear below... they wanted to make sure that everyone understands that sinners are to be punished in hell for ALL of eternity.  They will not be annihilated, or consumed like snow:


[12]  Job 24:19  Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave [H7585 - sheolthose which have sinned.

In Psalm 6 David speaks of himself and again, the translators can't admit that king David will be brought down to hell.


They certainly can't admit that the wicked will have "no remembrance" of God... they are tortured in hell forever and ever - specifically to remember their opposition to God!


And why would the wicked want to give thanks to God from hell?


[13]  Psa 6:5  For in death there is no remembrance of Thee: in the grave [H7585 - sheolwho shall give Thee thanks?

The translators certainly can't admit that David would be brought up from hell either:


[14]  Psa 30:3  O LORD, thou hast brought up my [David] soul from the grave [H7585 - sheol]: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

Are people silent in hell?  How can they be if they're gnashing their teeth and screaming in endless pain and torture?


[15]  Psa 31:17  Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave [H7585 - sheol].

________________________

Sheep are not "laid in the hell"... the translators knew they couldn't get away with this one:


[16-17]  Psa 49:14  Like sheep they are laid in the grave [H7585 - sheol]; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave [H7585 - sheol] from their dwelling.

They certainly didn't want us thinking there was an escape from hell.  This is David prophesying of Christ:


[18]  Psa 49:15  But God will redeem My soul from the power of the grave [H7585 - sheol]: for he shall receive me. Selah.

In verse 1 David just mentioned how Jehovah is the God of his salvation.  Translators: "we probably shouldn't use 'hell' in this one..."


[19]  Psa 88:3  For my [David] soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave [H785 - sheol]

[20]  Psa 89:48  What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave [H785 - sheol]?

Hell swallows nobody alive:

[21]  Pro 1:12  Let us swallow them up alive as the grave [H785 - sheol]; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

I'll bet they wanted to use hell in the following verse, but decided they wouldn't be able to get away with it.  Four things that are never satisfied:


[22]  Pro 30:16  The grave [H785 - sheol]; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.

[23]  Psa 141:7  Our [including David] bones are scattered at the grave's [H785 - sheolmouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.

There's no way the translators could get this next one to fit their doctrine of hell:


[24]  Ecc 9:10  Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work [H4639 - activity], nor device [H2808 - reason, intelligence], nor knowledge [H1847 - awares, consciousness], nor wisdom [H2451 - in a good sense, skillfulness], in the grave [H7585 - sheol], whither thou goest.

No way would they compare God's jealousy with hell:


[25]  Son 8:6  Set me [Solomon] as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave [H7585 - sheol]: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

They couldn't translate the next one as hell, because in verse 9 they already drew attention to hell and ALL the kings of the nations would greet him from there.


Not to mention that "the worms cover thee" is a known idiom to the Hebrews and speaks specifically to the grave and the dead body.


[26]  Isa 14:11  Thy pomp [king of Babylon] is brought down to the grave [H7585 - sheol], and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

No way the translators could explain the great and good king Hezekiah in hell:


[27]  Isa 38:10  I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave [H7585 - sheol]: I am deprived of the residue of my years.


Still concerning Hezekiah:


[28]  Isa 38:18  For the grave [H7585 - sheolcannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

Pharaoh went down to the grave... he died.  The Assyrian monarch; when his monarchy was destroyed, and he ceased to be king, and was stripped of all his majesty, power, and authority, and was dead, and laid in the grave, and buried.


[29]  Eze 31:15  Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave [H7585 - sheolI caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

Once again, the translators can't have anyone thinking that they will be ransomed from hell:

[30-31]  Hos 13:14  I will ransom them from the power of the grave [H7585 - sheol]; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave [H7585 - sheol], I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

That's it...


Every instance of sheol translated as "grave" instead of "hell".

Now - let's look at the three occurrences of sheol translated as "pit".

The first two verse are dealing with an actual calamity that God caused.  These men were killed in the disaster.  They died and went down to sheol - state of the dead.

[1]  Num 16:30  But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit [H7585 - sheol]; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. 

[2]  Num 16:33  They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit [H7585 - sheol], and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.


The translators obviously can't include Job in hell... 

[3]  Job 17:16  They shall go down to the bars of the pit [H7585 - sheol], when our [including Job] rest together is in the dust.

Every single time you find the Hebrew word sheol and the Greek word hades you should instantly think of the "unseen", the "imperceptible", the "state of the dead".


When doing so, you'll find that Inspired definition to be True!  There was no need to translate sheol as grave, hell, or pit.

The inspired definition of the UNSEEN works perfectly in EVERY instance.

When man departs from the living, where have they gone?

Job 14:10  But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man gives up the ghost, and WHERE IS HE?

They are ALL in one state!

Ecc 3:20  ALL go unto ONE place...

Job 7:21  ... for now shall I sleep in the soil; and thou shall seek me in the morning, but I shall NOT BE.

Where have they gone?

Into a region that is "unseen" to us.  It is "imperceptible", impossible to perceive to us.

Hebrew SHEOL and the Greek HADES...
