In Parts 1 and 2 we've discussed the olam ebah (ancient hatred) and the heritage from which it stems.
The time of Jacob's trouble, or distress, is a familiar term and one that is associated with Daniel's 70th week.
Jacob's Trouble
Jer 30:3-9 'For behold, days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel and Judah.' The LORD says, 'I will also bring them back to the land that I gave to their forefathers and they shall possess it.'
Now these are the words which the LORD spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah:
"For thus says the LORD, 'I have heard a sound of terror, Of dread, and there is no peace. 'Ask now, and see if a male can give birth. Why do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in childbirth? And why have all faces turned pale?
'Alas! For that day is great, there is none like it; and it is the time of Jacob's distress, but he will be saved from it.
'It shall come about on that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'that I will break his yoke from off their neck and will tear off their bonds; and strangers will no longer make them their slaves. But, they shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them."
A Few Notes
[1] Above, you can see that God said "I will also bring them back to the land that I gave their forefathers and they shall possess it".
This is exactly what happened in 1948... the nation of Israel was restored. In 1947 the United Nations adopted a partition plan for Palestine recommending the creation of independent Arab and Jewish states.
Arabs rejected the plan and the Jewish people embraced it resulting in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. There have been several wars since then, and ever since 1967 Israel has occupied territories including the West Bank, Golan Heights, and the Gaza Strip.
[2] Also note from above that God will "restore the fortunes of My people Israel AND Judah". Meaning, the current occupants of Israel include representatives of all 12 of the tribes of Israel.
[3] Notice the reference above to labor pains as in child birth, or as Jesus called it:
Mat 24:8 But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.
[4] Also, if you'll recall my blog from Part 2, a statement that Isaac made to Esau after Esau lost his birthright to Jacob:
Gen 27:40 ... But it shall come about when you become restless, that you will break his yoke from your neck.
Jacob Flees
Gen 35:1-3 Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau."
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods which are among you, and purify yourselves and change your garments; and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone."
[1] First notice that God refers to him as "Jacob"... his older name. This is after God has renamed him to Israel.
Gen 32:28 He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."
Jacob [H3290 - ya'aqob] means "heel holder" or "supplanter". To this day, world opinion, especially that of Palestine holds that the Nation of Israel is not entitled to the land... they are "supplanters" of the Palestinian people.
After the Nation of Israel wrestles with God once again - during Daniel's 70th week - the land will be renamed once again... to "Beulah" which means "bride".
Isa 62:4 It will no longer be said to you, "Forsaken," Nor to your land will it any longer be said, "Desolate"; But you will be called, "My delight is in her ," And your land, "Married" [H1166 - baal, Beulah]; For the LORD delights in you, And to Him your land will be married.
When Jesus returns, all of Israel will look upon the One they have pierced and they will repent, and be saved. They will no longer be "supplanters" but the rightful heirs according to the Abrahamic covenant.
[2] Secondly, notice that the passage above in Jeremiah pictures the flight of Israel.
Jesus said:
Mat 24:15-16 Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.
Rev 12:6 Then the woman [Israel] fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.
Who do you suppose "Jacob" is fleeing from? Remember above?
"you fled from your brother Esau"
The time of Jacob's Trouble is tied to Esau. Esau is denoted as "red" on two occasions:
Gen 25:25 Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.
And then Esau was named Edom [H123 - edom, red]:
Gen 25:30 and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.
We also have learned that red is also denoted as the color of the Beast of Revelation 13 and the color of the red horse in Revelation 6 under the second seal.
If Esau is a picture of the coming Antichrist and his Beast Empire we should probably learn a little more about Esau which we did in Part 2.
Esau (Edom) and his descendants (Edomites) are a violent people, along with the descendants of Ishmael. Edomites, live by the sword and it is also their destiny to die by the sword (Mat 26:52, Rev 13:10).
Edom has played second fiddle to Israel throughout history. Isaac told Esau that when the time is right, he would break Israel's yoke from his neck. The Edomites will briefly conquer Israel again.
In the end Jesus will break the yoke from Israel's neck which the Antichrist will place on them during the last half of Daniel's 70th week.
Jacob fled from Esau once before and I believe this pictures their future flight as well.
It was during the first flight that Jacob had his dreams we know as "Jacob's Ladder".
Esau Throughout History
Let's take a look at some of the descendants of Esau.
When king Saul was pursuing David, he discovered priests of Nob giving food and shelter to David. This enraged Saul who then ordered his army officers to kill the priests.
None of his men (Israelites) would obey this order... they "were not willing to put for their hand to attack the priests of the LORD" (1 Sam 22:17).
One of Esau's descendants, Doeg, was more than willing however. In fact, he was so zealous that he not only killed the priests but also everything is sight:
1 Sam 22:18-19 Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn around and attack the priests." And Doeg the Edomite turned around and attacked the priests, and he killed that day eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. And he struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; also oxen, donkeys, and sheep he struck with the edge of the sword.
Haman, also an Edomite, attempted genocide against the Jews during the time of Queen Esther. Haman is referenced as an Agag, or Agagite - a title of an Amalekite king. Amalek was the grandson of Esau. He was the son of Eliphaz who was one of the sons of Esau.
While Herod the Great was raised under Judaism, he was also a direct descendant of Esau (Idumean). We know that Herod is the one who attempted genocide against Jewish male babies in his attempt to kill Jesus.
As I mentioned in Part 2, there were many conflicts between Edomites and Israelites.
Eze 35:5-6 Because you [Edom] have had ancient [olam] hatred [ebah] and have delivered the sons of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of the punishment of the end, therefore as I live," declares the Lord GOD, "I will give you over to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you; since you have not hated bloodshed, therefore bloodshed will pursue you.
Amo 1:11-12 Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not revoke its punishment, because he [Esau] pursued his brother [Jacob] with the sword, while he stifled his compassion; his anger also tore continually, and he maintained his fury forever. So I will send fire upon Teman [grandson of Esau] and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah."
Edomites, descendants of Esau, are currently spread all over the Middle East and I believe that Scripture is referring to Islam when it speaks of these. Their "capital" is in Saudi Arabia at Mecca.
Jer 49:17-18 Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss at all its wounds. "Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it.
Oba 1:18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; but the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken.
Edom is a symbol for all of those who follow Antichrist in the final days... Edom is a symbol for the evil that God will crush in the end... Edom is a symbol for all those of Ishmael and Esau... modern Islamists are Edomites.
God's wrath will wipe them from the face of the earth in order to purify this earth of all stubbornness, pride, and sin:
Isa 34:5 For My sword is satiated in heaven, behold it shall descend for judgment upon Edom and upon the people whom I have devoted to destruction.
Jesus Robe
Jesus, Himself, will extinguish them:
Rev 19:11-13 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
It is not Jesus' own blood on His robe:
Isa 63:1-3 Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, this One who is majestic in His apparel, marching in the greatness of His strength?
"It is I [Jesus] Who speak in Righteousness, mighty to save."
Why is Your apparel red, and Your garments like the one who treads in the wine press?
"I [Jesus] have trodden the wine trough alone, and from the peoples there was no man with Me. I also trod them in My anger and trampled them in My wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, and I stained all My raiment.
I think it's pretty clear who we're to be watching for and what this Beast of Revelation represents. It all goes back to the olam ebah.
Be watching, and be prepared!
1 Pet 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Some of these excerpts are from my personal notes copied from 30+ years of studying... some of these notes are direct copies of various sources - I do not claim to have authored every word of this... it's just a mass collection I've tucked away over the years for my own personal studies... I didn't consider a bibliography at the time I directly copied small excerpts from various authors. Also, any emphasis (underlines, bold text, all CAPS, etc.) noted above was only meant to capture my personal attention as I studied...
