Chastise versus Punish

In each blog, I often reference many different topics that I've already covered (or will soon cover), and maybe you've missed.  Please review my blogs to read more...

How does God deal with our sin and our faults?

Heb 12:6-8  For whom the Lord loves He chastens [G3811], and scourges [G3146] every son whom He receives.

If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not?

But if you be without chastisement, whereof ALL are partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons.

In this day and age, less and less children are "chastised" by their fathers.

It's easy to see the devastating results on our society.  Ideally, our children need to be chastened (not beaten).

Continuing in Hebrews:

Heb 12:9-11  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of Spirits, and live?

For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; BUT HE for our profit, that we might be partakers of His Holiness.

Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless AFTERWARD it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

The Book of Hebrews is a difficult book, but this is probably one of the easiest to understand passages.

One of the things I've learned during these studies was the definition of the Greek word paideuo [G3811].  It's directly associated with "children".

From G3816; to train up a child, that is, educate, or (by implication) discipline (by punishment): - chasten (-ise), instruct, learn, teach.

God is working on our Spiritual life, not our flesh... so, how does He accomplish "chastisement" on a Spiritual level?

Back to Hebrews 12:

Heb 12:29  For our God is a consuming fire.

As trash is burned and precious metals are purified by the use of LITERAL and PHYSICAL fire, so God burns our Spiritual trash and purifies those qualities of character worth saving by His SYMBOLIC and SPIRITUAL fire.

Physical fire is inanimate and uncaring. God's spiritual fire is caring and loving.

Throughout Scripture, we are assured that EVERYONE will be "revealed", "tried", "salted", and "baptized", "in FIRE".

1 Cor 11:31-32  For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.  But when we are judged, we are chastened [G3811] of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Job 5:17  Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

Rev 3:19  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten [G3811]: be zealous therefore, and repent.

My point?

Are only believers disciplined, or are unbelievers also to be disciplined of God?

Hebrews (see above) tells us that God chastens every son... if we endure chastening, then we know that God is dealing with us as sons.

Any "without chastisement"...

... are there "any" without chastisement?

... "whereof ALL are partakers".

... then they are referred to as "bastards, and NOT sons".

Who does God love?  The text says, that is who He chastens.

Heb 12:6  For whom the Lord loves He chastens...

Does God love both believers and unbelievers?

Does God love the "bastards", those enemies of The Cross, or does He hate the "bastards"?

[1]  If God loves the "bastards", then the text dictates that He will eventually have to chasten them.

Heb 12:6  For whom the Lord loves He chastens...

Afterwards, God then "receives" all that He chastens.

[2]  But, if God hates the "bastards"... wait a minute!  God can't hate His enemies!

Jesus said:

Mat 5:44  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

If Jesus said the above, can His Father hate those "bastards"?

Mat 5:48  Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect

God loves the world...

Joh 3:16-17  For God so LOVED the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting [G166 - aionios] life.  For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved [G4982 - sozo].

G4982 - sozo;  From a primary word σῶς sōs̄ (contraction for the obsolete σάος saos, “safe”); to save, that is, deliver or protect (literally or figuratively): - heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.
Total KJV occurrences: 110

Bastards are born bastards and did not create themselves, or choose to be bastards.

What does God do with those enemies of The Cross?

Php 3:18-19For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of The Cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction [G684 - apoleia]...

apoleia is a derivative of G622 - apollumi.

Destroyed, Perished, and Lost

Briefly, I've touched on the word "destroyed" in another blog.  Let's briefly review that blog.

Jesus said:

Mat 10:28  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy [G622 - appolumi, destroy, die, perish] both soul and body in hell [G1067 - gehenna].

From Matthew we learn that God is "able to destroy" our very soul in Gehenna.  Note that it does not say that God will "kill the soul", or "annihilate the soul"... only destroy [G622 - appolumi] it.

[G622 - appolumi] Destruction of our soul is not a wicked thing, but a good thing.

It is a good thing to lose (Greek: apollumi - destroy) our carnal soul for God's sake, and this destruction of the soul and flesh (carnality) for God takes place in Spiritual Gehenna.

Mat 10:39  He that finds his life shall lose [G622 - appolumi, destroy, die, perish... SAME Greek word as used above in verse 28] it: and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it.

There are those who claim that this apollumi, "destroyed", "perished", and or lost means:

"putting out of existence", or in a word: annihilation.

They claim this to support their Theological box concerning eternal torment and/or complete and utter annihilation.

I shouldn't even have to address this one... only one verse, you'd think - would shut them up!

Jesus came for the express purpose of saving those who are apollumi!

Luk 19:10  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost [G622 - appolumi].

The word "lost" is the perfect tense of "destroy".  It's referring to those who are in a state of destruction... NOT merely those who will be destroyed, or annihilated, at some point in the future.

ALL men are apollumi apart from Christ!

In every single case, that which is destroyed is capable of being saved.  It is because we are apollumi in the first place that Jesus came!

If we weren't apollumi, salvation would not be necessary.

What about "perished"?

Can a person perish and still be saved?

Apart from the fact that perish is almost always translated from the same Greek word apollumi...

Ecc 7:15  All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that PERISHES in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongs his life in his wickedness.

Isa 57:1  The righteous PERISHES, and no man lays it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

Again,

G622 - apollumi; From G575 and the base of G3639; to destroy fully (reflexively to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively: - destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.

According to the Book of John, even Jesus "perished"...

Joh 18:14  Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man [Jesus] should die [G622 - apollumi] for the people.

"Lost" has all the same answers.

92 times in the New Testament we find the Greek word: apollumi.

It is always translated as one of these three words (except for John 18:14 above), and it always means the same thing as I've tried to describe above.

I pray for appollumi to come upon my carnal soul and to be destroyed... to perish... and to be lost.

Some of these excerpts are from my personal notes copied from 30+ years of studying... some of these notes are direct copies of various sources - I do not claim to have authored every word of this... it's just a mass collection I've tucked away over the years for my own personal studies... I didn't consider a bibliography at the time I directly copied small excerpts from various authors.  Also, any emphasis (underlines, bold text, all CAPS, etc.) noted above was only meant to capture my personal attention as I studied...
